Creating Country/Location/Geo Redirect Links
What is geotargeting?
Geotargeting is the process of showing users different content based on their country.
Geotargeting works looking up the public IP address of the user in a public database.
Why use georedirects?
Linkly allows you to create country-level geo-redirects. Different users will go to different URLs based on their country.
Georedirects make sense when:
- You want to show different offers to different regions, but want to share just one link.
- You want to show different pricing in different regions
Country specific content generally has higher conversion rates than generic content, particularly where people expect to pay in local currency.
How to Redirect Users based on Country (Georedirects)
Location redirect links allow you to redirect visitors by country.
Click Create New Link from the menu.
Give the link a nickname.
This nickname is internal and isn't shown to the user.
In the Destination field, enter your fallback URL.
This is where all traffic will go that doesn’t meet a certain country target.
Under Targeting, click Country.
For each country you want to target, enter in a specific destination URL.
Any you don't select will go to the fallback URL at the top.
For each country you want to target, enter in a specific destination URL.When you’re done, click Save Link.
Test your link. You'll need to test it from real internet connections in the countries you are targeting.
Linkly's IP geolocation doesn't support VPN connections.
When you’re done, click Save Link.
You’ll be presented with the link summary page, which will include a breakdown of the link’s behaviour in differing regions.
Frequently Asked Questions about Geo-redirects
Do users know they’ve been redirected based on their country?
Users will not know they’ve been redirected based on their country - the process is instantaneous & invisible.
How do you know which country a user is in?
Country redirection is dependent on IP address geolocation. IP addresses are matched with public databases of internet service providers in each region.
What if a user is using a VPN?
If a user is using a VPN, it isn't possible for Linkly to be able to reliably establish a user's location, as VPNs affect traffic in unnatural ways.
To test a geo-redirect from a location, you should use a normal internet connection in that country.
