Using the extension

The Linkly extension adds a Create Linkly Link button (the Linkly icon) to your browser toolbar. When you click it, it opens a new tab with the Create New Link form already populated with the current page URL. If you don't see the button, open your browser's Extensions menu (the puzzle-piece icon) and pin Linkly to the toolbar.

You can also shorten a link on any page without opening it. Right-click the link and choose Shorten with Linkly, and the Create New Link form opens in a new tab with that link's URL filled in.

If a web address is plain text rather than a clickable link, for example in an AI chat reply, an email or a document, highlight it, right-click the selection and choose Shorten with Linkly.

Browser extension FAQs

What permissions does the extension need?

The extension asks for two minimal permissions: access to the current tab, so it can read the page URL when you click the toolbar button, and a right-click menu item, so it can add “Shorten with Linkly”. It does not read, store or transmit your browsing history, and it only passes the URL you choose to Linkly.

Yes. Highlight the web address, right-click the selection and choose “Shorten with Linkly”. If the selection contains a full URL, Linkly uses it; a bare domain such as example.com is opened as https://example.com.

Does the extension work in incognito/private mode?

By default, browser extensions are disabled in incognito mode. You can enable it in your browser's extension settings if needed.

Is there an extension for Safari or Edge?

Currently, we only offer extensions for Chrome and Firefox. Microsoft Edge can install Chrome extensions from the Chrome Web Store.
