What is an SMS Link?

An SMS link is a special type of hyperlink that opens the user's default messaging app with a pre-filled phone number — and optionally a pre-filled message — when tapped. Instead of navigating to a web page, tapping an sms: link opens a new text message ready to send.

SMS links are perfect for click-to-text buttons on mobile landing pages, contact CTAs, customer support shortcuts, and QR codes on printed material like flyers, posters, or business cards.

SMS Link Format

The basic format is sms:+(country code)(number). You can add an optional message body after a ? :

  • phone number — In E.164 format with a leading + and country code (e.g., +15551234567)
  • body — Pre-fill the message text. Linkly URL-encodes spaces as %20, commas as %2C, and newlines as %0A.

For example: sms:+15551234567?body=Hello%20world

How to Use

  1. Enter the full phone number including the country code (e.g., +1 for US, +44 for UK)
  2. Optionally add a pre-filled message that users will see when their messaging app opens
  3. Copy the generated link or HTML snippet and use it anywhere — websites, ads, emails, or QR codes
